For Vickie

Posted on | January 17, 2007 |

I am feeling much better today! The fatigue has mostly passed and I was able to spend the entire day in the studio! It’s quite an accomplishment, I have to say, considering how I’ve been feeling the past week or so. Today I was able to work some more on the journal pages I posted yesterday. I will scan them in the morning so I can show you the progression.

For Vickie I’ve also worked on a page for Vickie Mack’s “healing” LFB (Little Fat Book), which is being coordinated by Sandee. I created this background much as I usually do. I started with a piece of watercolor paper. Then I put down some torn up text pages with Gel Medium. When that dried, I used Fluid Acrlics to create the color. I used several layers, letting each dry before the next. The last layer was created by using sequin waste as a stencil and a red fluid acrylic. I actually wanted it to be unidentifiable as sequin waste, so I chose the thinner paint to let the color move and create the pattern. The photo is one I purchased in a group of photos at an antique store. I scanned it and cleaned it up a bit (the snapshot was originally crooked and so I removed the background in PhotoShop. I printed it on my Laser Printer and then attached with Gel Medium. I did the same with the text. The back of the page is the same, with the text only stating my name and address. I hope it brings a smile to Vickie’s face and helps her to heal.

And, don’t forget! There is still time for you to enter into the “Box of Inspiration” contest sponsored by Sakura and ArtsyFran Designs!

This is beautiful. Thanks for telling how you did it. I’m still needing all those little bits and pieces. Uhhh - what is sequin waste?
Hope you have another productive day creating.
    Hugs,

I’m sure she will love it. I really like how the “friends” stand in b&w really stand out from the bright background.

I have a quesition. What type of liquid acrylic do you use? The good stuff or the cheapie stuff? I’m more parital to cheapie for this type of work, but I wonder if the good stuff makes a bigger difference. AND, do you always use gel medium as an adhesive? Do you ever use PVA?

I guess that’s more than one question huh?

Love the LFB page! Great colors! Love the red with the green! And I’m soooo happy to hear you are feeling better! But very bummed about your fridge! Gosh, between me and you… me with my broken dishwasher and you with the broken fridge, we could refurnish a kitchen! well, almost… not that I want to, mind you….

[...] And, have also used cheap craft acrylics for some projects, especially those that will soak up a lot of paint, like something on wood. I could seal the stuff first, but sealants and I don’t get along well, and I prefer to use a cheap acrylic paint as my first layer and then, if I want a specific effect, I add other media to make it work. For the specific project you asked about - the 4 x 4 LFB page I used Golden’s Fluid Acrylics for the background. Why? Well, I was experimenting - that’s what I do with my backgrounds - and I just took a stab at playing with them in different ways. I really liked the vibrancy of these colors for this page in particular. Q:Do you always use gel medium as an adhesive? Do you ever use PVA? [...]
