The in-process Journal Pages

Posted on | January 17, 2007 | 14 Comments

I’m still rather fatigued from the treatment yesterday, but I did want to get the images up that I said I would. Juliet's Journal Page 1All of these use the Sakura Gelly Roll products that are the contest prizes, as well as Sakura’s Permapaque Pens. To the left is the first page I created in Juliet’s calendar Journal. Her calendar is an MC Escher calendar, so there are some really cool images to alter. This one, as you can probably see in the background, started off as a fish study. I added elements and doodled – as I always do – and just played with the design to make it work. I actually started this one weeks ago, when I first got the journal, and I like it enough that it might be done.Second Page in Juliet's Journal

The one to the right focuses on all the new possibilities the new year brings, and that simply by inking things in (such as goals, wishes, and deadlines, etc.), we can create our own dreams. The car image is one of my old journal pages that I printed on my color printer. I use a lot of older pages over again in new ways. And the little guy at the bottom is a guy I found in an antique store!

January 1 in Juliet's Journal

The next page is where I finally got to wish Juliet a happy new year, with a picture (also from an antique hunt!) of a woman who looks very serious, but is wearing a party hat! She’s got a car that she’s sort of floating above (I have no idea what that’s all about, but hey, at least she’s there and in a party mood!). And, I added a Victorian cameo as the hod ornament. I want to keep the actual journaling from the first two days visible, so this page is almost done. I may just add a bit more color.

Juliet's Journal Page 4The fourth page is still a work in progress. I was testing out some of the new Sakura pens I got, and it’s the Gold Shadow Gelly Roll Pens that give the metalic look to this page. The Moonlight Gelly Roll pens are what I journaled with, and the letters that spell out “Vertigo” are from my own collage sheets. The design of the bird came from cutting up another photocopy of the journal page and the small cabinet photos are from antiquing. This page is not done yet. I will need to do more doodling and mabe add some more color to the page.

juliet's Journal - double spreadThe final page I’m working on has a self-portrait of MC Escher. I’m enjoying cutting up hand-decorated papers to dress him up. It’s not done yet, and it is kind of silly, but I like it. On the right side, I’m creating a layout about the dreams of children. I think that, as an artist, we all have to have a bit of active child in us, so I feel as if I need to somehow talk about that in my drawing and it contrasts well, I think, with the seriousness of the unadorned portrait.
Don’t forget to leave a comment so you, too, can be entered into the Sakura “Box of Inspiration” contest! I will draw a name Monday, January 22nd at 9 am Mountain Time. You can enter up to once a day by commenting in this blog. Each comment gets you another chance to win this prize worth more than $40 retail!

    Hi Fran,
These pages are so great. I especially like the one that says vertigo with your own collage letters. The metallic effect with the gold shadow gelly roll pen is something I really adore. I also like the one of dreams with children. I agree totally about letting our inner child express itself freely.
Thank you for all this sharing of your art.
    Hugs,
    Wendy

I never would have thought of copying my own work and using it as a collage element. That certainly gives me food for thought.

I do enjoy all the bright colors and texture on your pages. They are just fun to look at.

Brilliant-as usual! I love the idea of exploring the dreams of children. As artists, I think we all have a bit of child in us that keeps our creative spark alive. Picasso said something cool about this tho now I can’t remember what! Maybe more java will help! Great work Fran!

Fran – All of your calendar pages are delightful but I find myself especially drawn to the Fish Study. I think you kept the right amount of the original piece to identify it but your additions give it a whole new feel. Your blog is a joy to read and while I don’t visit every day, I do try to get by once or twice a week. I wish you good health so you can keep up the fantastic work.
