And a quilt (sort of) is born
Posted on | January 18, 2007 | 12 Comments
I spent what seemed like forever trying to get my bobbin loaded with the thread, but it worked finally and I actually did the majority of the work on my first Journal Quilt for January. It’s not even close to professional but considering that I have NEVER done this before, I have no training in it, and I don’t like to measure, I’m kinda proud!
As I mentioned earlier, I have a goal for 2007 to start using some of my artwork in fabric. I took this image and put it on fabric (thanks to my trusty ink jet and some fabric from The Vintage Workshop) and then did some embroidery to bring out some of her features. I got into this and realized that I didn’t want to do too much because if I added beads, it would probably kill the sewing machine needle. Now, what you need to know is that I have taken exactly one class on sewing. And that was about 10 years ago. So I continue to fight with my sewing machine and I can’t do much more than sew a straight stitch or zig zag. In fact, I couldn’t even load my bobbin without the use of the darned manual, never mind inserting it back in the case! But I soldiered on. And I like where she’s going. She needs some sequins perhaps and some beads, and maybe some trim, and I need to play with my machine more, but honestly, I’m fairly pleased with this first attempt.
I’ll keep you all updated as I move forward…
I will post the final versions of the calendar journal pages tonight or first thing tomorrow.

OMG!!!! Fran! This is so inspiring because I’m in exactly the same boat….very little sewing “training.” I have created quilts but every time I turn on the machine, I have to get the brochure to see how to thread the machine! lol This is beautiful! I wish I could see it in real life! Bravo!

Fran she’s lovely! I love the background. It looks like she’s standing in a beatiful garden.

The fabric you selected is wonderful – reminds me of Klimt. This is a wonderful start to your adventure in “playing” with the sewing machine.

Is there no end to your talent?? lol This is great. And if it’s any consolation, I am equally as bad with my sewing machine!

Fran, I think this is a lovely piece! It certainly doesn’t look like you had any trouble with it. Very good work!

You are so courageous. I can hardly believe that you still have to study your manual for how to put in the bobbin thread. This is fabulous for a first time. I really admire you! YES Fran.

This is just brilliant, for your first attempt you are a natural and the more you do the easier it will become. I think of my needle as a pencil when Im machine quilting. I remember when I first started my shoulders were always round my ears and my manual was battered and ‘dog eared’. Your art work is so beautiful that you dont want to distract from that either. Just enjoy what youre doing thats the most important thing. Hugs Jude xxx

Oh Wow! I love this! I just wish I could touch it.
I’ve been tempted to branch into fabric art, but it seems really intimidating to me. I can’t wait to see her with all the beading and other goodies on her.

I just had a minute to look through your blog, I really wanted to see what you came up with for your first attempt!
Wow, what a great deal of work you have done on this piece!
You are a natural artist and I think that you are off to a perfect start!
*Smiles*
I am glad that you tried this art form, it suits you!

Wow, Fran….your 1st fabric quilt is WONDERFUL!! You are so fortunate to be able to draw so that you can add this special, personal touch to each piece of your artwork. Keep them coming! We can learn and experiment with fabric together!!
