It’s for the birds

Bird BackgroundI’ve been working on the composition to use the bird I showed in this post. I created the image for a chunky book page exchange with one of my art groups. The compositions I played with today are all 5″ x 5″, but the book is 4″ x 4″ so I’ll need to shrink them a bit once I complete them. Since they can all be copies, that will work. I’ll probably add something to them for dimension, though…

Bird Collage - I'll Watch You - in progressAnyway, to the left is the background I painted for them today. It’s done on a 5″ x 5″ gallery wrapped canvas. I had pictured the bird in the tree, so I had to shrink the bird down from its original size (which was about 7 inches!) so it could work. I printed out a page with the bird in several sizes (We LOVE PhotoShop!). Then I cut them out, did some detail work on them with my pens (no surprise, there, I’m sure!) and I tried out some different compositions. The first is to the right. I’m not sure about the composition of this one. I think it needs something to balance it out at the bottom, but I’ll play around with it some. For now, however, I like that it looks as if the large bird is watching the small bird fly for the first time. It seems quite protective over the other bird.

Watching over Couple

This next one, to the left, is a bit more balanced, with the three birds, but I still feel like it’s missing something. It’s almost like the big bird is watching her children play together. We’ll see… Nothing is done yet. And I do want to add text to these. I also need to create a back for these pages for the book.

I did work on some other canvases. It was good to just play with the paintbrush today and leave alone the detail pen work for a day or so. I still dealt with detail, but not at the same level - if that makes sense… So I took out some canvases and I played today. I started to paint in my piece for the gallery, but I got impatient with the paint and so it got a bit muddied. I am going to work on it some more tomorrow night.

Tomorrow Angie and I will head to the gallery where her piece is being shown. I’m so excited to see her piece up on the gallery wall. We’re going to have some coffee and then head to the gallery. I’m looking forward to a FUN DAY! :)

How odd! I was just drawing a bird yesterday to use in one of my compositions. AND he turned out too large as well, so I reduced him in PS. BUT I wound up not using him in the end. Anyhooo….I really like the 3 birds best!

Hello fellow klutz, I dropped lots of pins on our kitchen floor the other night. I think artists are supposed to be klutzes?
I love the backgrounds for the birds. And I hope you had a great time at the gallery. Playing on canvases. Ooh - I’m terrified to even touch one, let alone play on one. Good for you. You’ve probably been playing on them for ages.

[...] And finally, this page to the right is a page I’m still in process with. I printed out one of my birds from a few weeks ago and I put it as the central piece in the collage on this page for Kathy’s Calendar Journal. It still needs a lot of work. Kathy wants us to sign in on the first page, and this page is the first page for February. I’ll work on it some more tonight while we watch television. [...]

[...] You may recall that back in this post I had tried to figure out the basic design of the front. Well, to the left, you can see the final design of the front of this page is on the left and the back on the right. The page that will be the front is all hand-painted pieces and collaged. I scanned the pieces and added the birds on each individual page. The back is from one of my photos that I took in Hawaii. The goose was flipped horizontally to fit into the scene and then collaged on. The pages are not quite what I was picturing, but to be honest, I don’t think I can do 30 of anything and be happy with it. They’re all different to some extent: The text is handwritten; I added some shading and outlining to the birds on the front… but there’s something about doing 30 of anything makes me tired and fatigued.
