Friday

Happy Friday, everyone! I cannot believe this week went by so quickly! I stayed in the studio all day yesterday, since DH played poker (poorly. He was home early!). I got to be in the studio until 10 pm. Usually I’m out of here when DH comes home, if not earlier!
I turned on my iTunes, cleared off the desk, and dug in to one of the projects I’ve wanted to do for a while. I was just inspired to do it for a friend, rather than myself! To the left you see “ART”. These are paper mache letters that I covered with scrapbooking papers last evening while half-watching The DaVinci Code (not a great movie, but an awesome book!).
This morning, I used ColorBox Fluid Chalk Cat’s Eyes to color the collaged papers and to bring out the colors my friend likes best. Then I added Liquitex Matte Medium to seal it. But, it needed more, so I used Golden Acrylic Glazing Medium and Golden Fluid Acrylics in Nickel Azo Yellow, Nickel Azo Gold, and Chromium Oxide Green to add another layer of translucent depth. The final step, which you may not be able to see is the addition of some foiling. I used Sakura’s Quickie Glue, let it dry until clear and then used the craft foil you can use with one of those heat foiling pens. I use the Quickie Glue instead! The foil is copper, another of my friend’s favorites!
(Hmm. I wonder if she’s figured out
who she is…)
This morning, while waiting for coats of the matte medium and paint to dry, I drew some faces. I’m still learning and I’m having trouble with the eyes, but these aren’t too bad, considering I haven’t kept up my goal of sketching regularly. I used a fashion magazine to choose the faces. I am trying hard to just get the key features and then the goal is to try to paint them with acrylics. I’ve done this with watercolors in the past, but it’s been a few years.
If you haven’t already, please take a moment to enter the Manic Monday contest! It’s sponsored by SunSpirit Studio this week. I’ve made some samples of this prize that are also in the post. Just comment in that post; read the post for details.
Now, back to doing some more sketching… Have a great Friday, everyone!

Love those letters, Fran, and your sketches are gorgeous – lovely, fluid lines. I hope you’re enjoying the practice and will show us some more soon.. Have a great weekend

I think your sketches look great! I’d love to see how you paint them. I haven’t painted faces yet with acrylics, although I’d love to learn how.

ART is quite stunning and I’m sure they mysterious recipient, (I know who it is) will love it.

Fran, the ART piece is wonderful (I suspect I know the recipient and, if correct, know she will love it). Your sketches look great to me.

[...] So, after I completed the first set of ART letters, I got motivated to work on a second set for another friend who is moving into her new home. And, well, then my hands were already all sticky and paint-covered, so I figured, what the heck? I’ll do my letters, which have been sitting here since Kansas City almost 3 years ago, painted an awful mustard color… So, I did those, too! Here are all three sets along with the names of the future recipients! [...]

[...] DJ, in her generosity, thanked us by showing us the art she taught at the retreat in Kauai. And then she was kind enough to share some of her techniques with us. To the right is the portrait I painted from one of the drawings I created last week. Now the most interesting thing, besides the technique and the fact that I love the work I did with DJ’s support, was that Angie and I were in the same room for an entire day, but we hardly talked. It was absolutely amazing how quiet it was in the studio. I usually have music on, at least. But not during this day of intense concentration and creating. [...]
