A decent day

Posted on | May 24, 2007 |

I tend to go through periods where I order a group of books that have been on my Amazon Wish List. Last week was one of those times. I ordered several books, some of which are still on their way, but last night I did receive Danny Gregory’s The Creative License. I was so excited to jump in, but I didn’t I decided it would be good to jump in this morning, which I did.

But let me back up a bit: Last night I bit down on my food and felt a severe pain in the right side of my jaw. So I called the dentist this morning at 7 am, when they opened (I love that my dentist opens that early!). They are so sweet there. They got me in at 11:30. But today was supposed to be an art day with Angie. I had emailed her that I was going to call the dentist and that I’d let her know what was going on. I emailed her immediately and we met for coffee at what we now call “our” Starbucks - it’s right between our two houses! We sat and talked for 2 hours - which is showing much restraint for us, I must say! But Angie wanted to get home and work on her journal quilt, and I wanted to stop at the art store before my appointment.

I drove to AZ Art Supply downtown - near my dentist’s office - and I picked up a sketchbook, some Matte Medium, and some Cara d’Ache Neocolors to add to my collection. I browsed a lot of other things, but I did not get them. I showed great restraint under the circumstances, I think! Happy with my purchases, I was ready to head out to the dentist’s office. I drove there, arriving early. What I love about Harris Dental is that they know their patients - we often don’t enter the office more than every six months, unless there’s a problem, but they know us all by name. I was greeted with a perfect white smile and told they’d be with me soon. Happily, it was nothing serious. I had quite a bit of dental work done in December and they just needed to adjust my bite on one of the crowns they fixed. It was lickety-split. And done. They also did an x-ray to make sure that there was no crack in the tooth and no problems with the root. There were none.
Happy with my news and my new book in hand, I stopped at a restaurant for lunch. I definitely should have stopped before doing this. And here’s why: I came home immediately after. About 10 minutes after I was home, vertigo hit. I don’t know what caused it. I just know that during lunch I was feeling a bit icky, but I assumed it was the heat. I guess I was wrong. I immediately took my medication and went to sleep for two hours. I’m now sitting here, happy that I am over the worst of the vertigo, but sad that my self-imposed 24-hour no-driving rule has kicked in.

I have read some of my book and I’m enjoying it. I love how Danny Gregory takes you through a lot of exercises to show you that you can learn to draw. And, while I do know that I can draw, I want to get better at it. And Danny Gregory is very supportive and acts as a cheering squad helping through the exercises. I am sure that I will get better. I’ve been drawing on and off since I was a kid. It’s time to let that happen more. And this book, I hope, will be a catalyst to that.

This weekend, as I mentioned in yesterday’s post, we have friends in town. Tonight, when Dave gets home, we’re going to meet them for dinner. I will, as always, pack my sketchbook in my purse and toss in a pen and, in this case, my new book. I am taking any and all occasions to draw. No, I won’t be rude and draw while people are actually talking TO me, but I will draw. For now, though, it’s time to get ready for dinner. Have a good night everyone!

Sounds like you had a nice dental visit… haven’t heard about one of those (or had one!) in a very long time LOL

Is this the same guy that runs a drawing group on Yahoo?

I’m glad your dental visit was easy and not traumatic. I’m sorry the vertigo struck to ruin your art day, but you seem to be “at the ready” for some good drawing experiences. Enjoy your week-end.
