Artful box

MMSurfaces class surface 2Well, in my Mixed Media Surfaces class at Joggles, we made some more cool surfaces. To the right is one of those surfaces. I really like this one. It has all the colors I’ve been using lately! Fused onto this surface are the following:

  • Backing Fabric: Turquoise polyester blend – it is similar in weight and hand to wool felt, but I’m allergic to wool, so this did well.
  • Misty Fuse: Each layer was fused with Misty Fuse. I LOVE this stuff! You can get it at Joggles, too.
  • Cheesecloth: I dyed the cheesecloth with Color Mists. This was the placed on the Misty Fuse layer directly on top of the backing fabric.
  • Next layer: Then I added more Misty Fuse and some Soy Silk Fibers, and Angelina Fibers.
  • Next layer: added more Misty Fuse and some chopped up pieces of coordinating fibers and ribbons
  • Final layer: Misty Fuse and tulle with some sparkly rhinestone thingies.Fabric Box Inside

Fabric BoxIt’s a sturdy surface and it will make some great projects. The first project I made for the class was the box to the left (closed) and right (inside image). It’s not the greatest sewing job, and I need to get better at it; however, for a first try, not so bad. :) I enjoyed working with the fabric and also enjoyed getting to know my sewing machine better.

And, no, no needles were broken in the making of this box! That, alone, is a huge success! :D

Very neat box. It looks like you’re having a great class. It sounds like you’re going to be fabric and sewing maven.

Hi, Fran–Your art is really great! I just signed up to get your feed every day.

Was wondering how you liked using Color Mists. They seem a bit $$$, but are they worth it? I don’t work a lot with watercolor; however, they seem like a great way to do backgrounds and work with stencils.
