Back in the studio

Posted on | February 4, 2008 |

I’m pleased to say that I’m safely back in the studio after all the balance issues I had. It appears that last week’s solumedrol treatments have finally done their magic!Ready for Class!

I spent much of this morning getting my things ready for the Watercolor Pencil Workshop with Cathy Johnson. Class starts tomorrow, and I couldn’t be more excited. After about 10 years of owning my pencils, using them to color in rubber stamped images and photos, I’m excited to try actually drawing and sketching with them. I’m all set with my paper cut to size, my pencils are sharpened, and my color chart is completed. I’m ready to take this all with me wherever I go so I can practice once we get moving on the class!

In high school, I chose to focus on science and other academics, rather than taking art classes. It was, as I saw it, the only way to get into college and to have it paid for by scholarships. It worked and I was able to go to the university of my choice, Brandeis University. However, as a result, I have had very little formal instruction in my artwork. I tried to take a watercolor class at a community college about when we lived in San Antonio, but I was humiliated by the instructor (my artwork was held up as an example of what NOT to do!) and I have avoided watercolor painting until recently. Now that I’m using my journals as visual journals and sketchbooks, I am enjoying my watercolor sketchbox. I think it’s time to bite the bullet and try to get the most out of these pencils.

Now that I’m ready for tomorrow’s class, I’m going to clear off the table in the studio and set up my sewing machine. I haven’t sewed in a while and I want to be sure to get back into it before Monday’s treatment!

Oh! And good news! I will be able to have my monthly treatments from home starting on Monday! That means I can stay connected, I don’t have to collect all of my things and bring them with me, and I can watch movies or have Angie over to sit with me. It’s awesome! So much easier and more relaxing than having to head out and then take a taxi home!

OK. Off to do some art!

Terrible story about the watercolor class to which I offer sympathy and empathy (I was told by my 8th grade art teacher never to take art again because it was a waste of any art teacher’s time - and I have a friend who was told in a colored pencil class that her pencils scratched the paper too loudly). Great news about getting your treatments at home. I hope you have a wonderful time at your watercolor pencil class.

Hope you keep feeling well enough to keep creating. This sounds like a heavenly class. Have fun!
