More watercolor pencil work

Sandy CoveI’ve continued to work on my watercolor pencil class. We’re in week 3, and we’re actually making this a two-week exercise. I’m glad for that, because we’re all finding this part a struggle. To the right is my first attempt after I received some feedback from the instructor. I like the movement in the water, but the sandy cliffs leave a lot to be desired.

Inlet - WIPAnd, to the left, is an inlet from Nawilliwilli Cove on the island of Kauai. I’ve edited out the condos in the background. I don’t think this one is finished, but it’s in process. I think it needs some pen work for more of a mixed media look. The colors, upon scanning the painting, appear much lighter and less intense than I see them in person. I am glad I stopped because I was afraid that if I’d gone any further, I’d have muddied it up.

I’m working on another water scene, which is wet right now. Water and, in particular, the white foam of the waves, appears to be a challenge for me. But I will continue to try.

I think water is incredibly difficult to portray and I’m very impressed by how good you are at it.
