Watercolor Pencil Day

Posted on | February 6, 2008 |

Ostrich ImageToday I started working on the first drawing with my watercolor pencils. I’ve never attempted to draw from some of my hundreds of photos from our travels, but I figured this was a great time to do that. I took a photo of an ostrich about 3 years ago at the San Diego Zoo. Until I went looking for something to draw, I had forgotten about this image in my digital library. Today I pulled it up on the MacBook, printed it, and then attempted to draw it using my Lyra Aquarelle watercolor pencils.

While I was working on it - layering color, adding watter, laying color, adding water, etc. - I found that I did not have the array of earthy tones that I would have liked. In the past, I’ve not tried to do anything with my watercolor pencils but to add detail or to color in a rubber stamped image. So, I found that I was in need of some more earthy tones. It was a perfect excuse to leave the house for my first driving excursion since all this health stuff happened. I went to Arizona Art Supply and picked up a small set of Derwent’s Graphitint pencils. The set of 12 came with several browns and other earthy colors. I added one more brown that I knew I would need for the ostrich.

I have to say, making this purchase was a very good choice. I used to work for Lyra, so I do have an affinity for their products. However, finding that this was missing and trying out the Graphitints was a useful thing. I was able to complete this drawing and I also have been working on a couple of landscapes that will take a bit longer.

I’m glad I came by your website! Your drawing is very good. I love colored pencils but just this Sunday a young man was telling me about Derwent’s Graphitint pencils and how great they were. I’ll have to try them. : )

I love the feeling of depth and texture you achieved. Obviously, your purchase was an excellent choice.
